Far away Projects and People

TearfundWe have been supporting Tear Fund  projects for several years. Recently, we joined in providing water harvesting resources for villagers in south west Uganda. We have also been supporting Tearfund’s work addressing issues of poverty and HIV/AIDS in Africa. We also give through Tearfund when disasters strike, whether it is in Haiti or Pakistan.

MAF

MAF planes have been helping in the war-torn southern Sudan. With people dying through poor diet, in one week hey flew in 7,000kg of emergency food to Akita , Rumbek, Yirol and Marial Lou. Mostly for TB and leprosy patients, the welcome supplies included milk powder, sorghum, beans and protein-rich biscuits.

Talents

The Talents Children's Mission is a small home in Elburgon, Kenya for 20 boys orphaned by AIDS. It was established in February 2007. St. Andrew’s people are involved, through their Small Groups, in sponsoring some of these boys. In May 2009, we raised funds for the new toilet block. We have just taken 'the Borehole Challenge', and raised £10,000, in order to provide funds to sink a borehole, to provide clean water for the home.

Africa's emerging Christian leaders need good theological training.

We support two second year students at the BHI, Teresa Limo and Alex Shaku. The College Principal, Patrick Mukoli, speaks very highly of them.

We also support Martin Olando, the latest member of staff. He teaches the Systematic Theology and Christian Worship courses to students preparing for ministry. Martin’s appointment has meant that BHI can expand their curriculum, and attract more students.

Dawn & Paul Weston, Islamabad, Pakistan

Working with the Member Care Foundation, Dawn & Paul are setting up a centre for rest and refreshment for members of the mission and aid agencies in Pakistan. They are seconded from Interserve, and will be making it possible for many to be sustained for their demanding ministries.
